Verse of the Day - Wise Counsel

Proverbs 19:20-21

20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction,
That you may be wise in your latter days.
21 There are many plans in a man’s heart,
Nevertheless the LORD’s counsel—that will stand.

Where do you seek counsel???  Is it from wise sources???  How do you determine wise???

In this passage, we are told to:

  • Listen to counsel - it is important for us to seek counsel - others advice especially in major decisions
  • Receive instruction - what use is counsel, if we refuse to listen???

Now, where should this counsel come from:

  • Many plans are in a man's heart - we have many different thought, but how are we to discern what is wise???
  • the Lord's Counsel - will stand!!! counsel that is wise and true is from the Lord!!!

So how do we find the Lord's counsel???

  • Look to God's Word - the Bible
  • Seek counsel from mature, wise Christians - pastors, leaders....

It is important for us to seek wise counsel - especially for major decisions.  We personally have a select group of people that we seek advice.  We listen to what they say, weighing their opinions - looking at all of the pros & cons (so to speak).  Of course - we first are seeking the Lord in much prayer!!!

Do YOU seek WISE counsel???

So I guess Oprah is out. LOL. Seriously though, thank you for the wise counsel on seeking wise counsel. I am often guilty of going to others with a problem before I have gone to God with it.

Oh, it is good to see a post from you. I was worried about you in recent days as we've not heard much from you and I knew you were having a rough time bouncing back.

This is a great post! I have always heard that there are three ways God speaks to us and one of them is through other Christians. We have to always discern, however, whether it is God or the devil speaking to us through other people and we can discern that through God's Word alone.

How do we descern wise council, I have talked with my pastor and he believes that most of the interpretations of the bible in the 70's, 80's, and to date are to liberal. He also looks at the Bible as very literal.
What sparked this conversation was I had read some writings from JP Moreland PhD, Talbot Teology school in Los Angeles on his phylosophy on hell. My pastor told me he is a man who evidently dosen't know his Bible and scripture and the Bible is very clear as to what Hell is like (eg.fire and brimstone) Moreland explained it as eternal life without the presents of God in your life. And fire and brimstone is an example of something no one wants and is a symbol. In my eyes, I do believe that eternal life without god or his goodness and living forever knowing that it was my fault that I was reason I was there would be the ultimate hell one could experience. Whom is right? Where should I go next?

I pray and am seeking council of the wise and to gain knowlede and understanding so that I may gain a little wisdom on this and many other questions regaurding the scriptures.

A little sad that no one has posted a comment on this in so many months. Believe the Word. Hell is described many times. it is much much more than the absence of God. All non-believers have that. Yes, it would be extremely difficult as a Christian believer to have God removed from our lives but Hell is much more than that. What punishment would it be to Satan to have God's presence removed from Him?
Hell as an eternal painful physical, mental and emotional torture is very real.

Thanks Lori for your post. very important that you listen for God's leading and ensure that counsel received lines up with that. We have all seen decisions made with "wise counsel" that show themselves to be plans of man rather than God.
